WHAT WE DO

Haven Hardwoods is a responsible hardwood flooring installation, sanding and refinishing company.  We are an award-winning, locally owned and operated company.

We sand and refinish existing hardwood floors to make them look brand new!  We install all types of hardwood, engineered, laminated, ceramic and luxury tile flooring.

Ever wonder if you have beautiful hardwood floors under that old carpet?  The majority of older houses in Western Pennsylvania have gorgeous hardwood under their existing carpet. You might be walking on them everyday without knowing it!

What if you don't have hardwood?  Well, we have a solution for that too!

INSTALLATION

PREFINISHED INSTALLATION

RAW INSTALLATION

Haven Hardwoods offers the complete installation of many types of flooring.  This includes hardwoods such as oak, maple, ash, pine and cherry.  We also install laminated flooring,  luxury vinyl, engineered hardwood and ceramic tile.  Please feel free to look at our F.A.Q. page or contact us regarding these floors.

These types of flooring come with factory sprayed finish on them already.  While the individual manufacturers guarantee the finish, Haven Hardwoods guarantees the craftsmanship of the installation.  Prefinished flooring can be found in almost any variety of species, colors and sheens.

Haven Hardwoods not only installs raw hardwood, but also sands the floor, then, as an optional service, trowels wood putty on the entire floor to fill any nail holes or gaps. The floor then gets sanded again and finished with the customer's choice of color and sheen.

SAND AND FINISH

RECOAT

STAIRS

Haven Hardwoods offers a full sand and finish service.  The floor is sanded down to bare wood and finished with our client's desired color.  Coats of polyurethane are then applied to the floor for added durability and protection.  This is our most popular choice.

Although it is not one of our guaranteed services, Haven Hardwoods does offer a recoat service as part of the refinishing process.  During the recoat, the floor is lightly scuffed and a fresh coat of urethane is applied on top.  The floor is not sanded to bare wood during this process, but merely abraded so the new finish will adhere to the surface.

When refinishing stairs, Haven Hardwoods provides a couple of options.  Option one is to simply sand the tread of the stair.   The tread is the horizontal part of the stair.  Option two is to sand both the treads and the risers.  The risers are the vertical part of the stair.  We do not sand the step stringers.  Haven Hardwoods highly recommends sanding both treads and risers to highlight the full beauty of the staircase.

Owner

Andrew Matotek

Andrew is originally from Philadelphia, PA however he has grown up in Beaver Falls,  PA for most of his life.  During his time in college Andrew learned the flooring trade firsthand by helping his older brother start a now successful sanding and installation company.  He was able to learn and apply many water-based finishes before they became popular in the U.S. by working with a European craftsman.  He has over 21 years of experience working on floors.

After graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Edinboro University of PA,  Andrew met and married his wife, Jacquelyn.  They decided to stay in Beaver County to raise their three children.  They now reside outside of Chippewa Township.

Andrew enjoys reading, hanging out with his dogs and building furniture in his spare time.  He loves to learn and believes you can never stop being educated, no matter how long you have worked in a trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in Haven Hardwoods!  Below are a list of our most frequently asked questions.

  • How much dust does the sanding/refinishing process produce?

Our machines are equipped with dust collection vacuum system, thus reducing dust by 90% less than traditional dust collection methods.  We also seal off doorways of the work area.  We try to treat your house like our house so we understand that dust containment is essential.

  • How soon can I walk on the floors after they have been coated?

Water-Base: With socks only, 3-4 hours.  This does depend on factors such as the weather, climate-control systems and what species of wood.  With shoes, 24 hours. Finish is 75% - 90% cured (hardened) after 24 hours, and 100% cured after 7 days.

Oil-Base: Depending what brand is used, between 12 -24 hours. Curing takes 14-21 days, sometimes longer.

During the curing for both the water and oil finishes you should not use any cleaners or water on the floor. (See our Floor Care page for more extensive instructions on how to care for your new floor.)

  • Why does Haven Hardwoods try to use water-based polyurethanes?

Oil-based finishes are hazardous to your health because of their high VOC content.  VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds which are harmful gasses that negatively impact humans and the environment.  As seen  above, oil-based finishes usually take up to 24 hours to dry.  Water-based polyurethanes are safe to use, VOC complaint, nonflammable, fast drying and virtually odorless.  The best water finishes score better than oil finishes when testing for durability.  All that being said, we have exstensive experience applying water and oil finishes and do not have a problem using either one.

  • Does the floor molding have to be removed before sanding or installing a floor?

It does not if the floor is only going to be sanded. It does have to be removed before installing a new floor.

  • In what phase of renovating a house should my floors be sanded?

Refinishing a floor is usually is one of the last jobs a homeowner wants to do when remodeling.  If you are painting the same room that is going to be sanded we recommend priming and applying the first coat before the sanding. After the floors are done the subsequent coats of paint can be applied.

Note: Other projects occurring while the polyurethane is drying can create fine dust and make the floors final finish coat rough and grainy. We highly recommend the homeowner make sure that the house is not undergoing any construction while the urethane is drying.

  • Can pet and water stains be sanded out?

95% of the time the answer is no. Usually these types of stains permeate and actually start to decay the wood fibers. Sometimes we can stain the floor darker to hide the pet or water stains. However, pet/water stains will still be visible through the floor stain, just less noticeable.

  • Will the new wood used to make repairs match my existing floor?

Not exactly. We take pride in the craftsmanship when installing a repair but factors such as the age, light and moisture exposure, and the cut of the wood affect the coloring. We will attempt to match the existing floor using stains. Very few repairs are recognizable after the finish ages a few years.  Throughout the years we have acquired various reclaimed flooring which may help us when patching your floor.

  • How long will the finish on my floors last?

Our polyurethane finishes should last a lifetime with very little upkeep.  Proper maintenance includes keeping the floors free of dirt and periodical re-coatings. Once high traffic areas begin to show signs of wear, they should be screened and re-coated to prevent sanding and refinishing.

  • What is the process for a recoat and why isn't there a guarantee?

A recoat is the slight scuffing of the floor to abrade the top layer of existing finish so that the new coat that we are applying will adequately adhere. A recoat cannot and will not replace sanding your floor!!! Scratches in the wood will not come out.

We do not guarantee the recoating because we have no way of knowing what was on the floor prior to us recoating it. If there are any chemicals on the existing floor when we coat there is a chance that an orange peel effect will take place. The orange peel effect is when the finish easily peels and/or has splotches that did not take the applied urethane.

  • What is a laminated floor?

Laminated flooring is made with layers which are bonded together under extreme heat and pressure. The wear-resistant surface is made to provide great strength and durability. The decorative layer can simulate wood grains, marble or stone.

Laminated floors are specially designed to provide an extremely stable foundation with minimal expansion and contraction, making them ideal for below grade or concrete sub-floor installations. They are also popular in kitchens and because they require very little maintenance, though they will swell if they come into contact with moisture.

  • What is an engineered floor?

Engineered wood floors are produced by gluing multiple thin ply layers that are glued together. The top thicker hardwood veneer wear layer is glued on top surface of the core and is available in most any hardwood species.

Engineered wood flooring should not be confused with laminate wood flooring. The main difference between engineered flooring and laminate flooring is that laminate contains no actual wood.  Engineered floors are slightly more resistant to higher moisture levels than solid wood flooring, which adds to their appeal to use in damp basements.  Engineered flooring can be installed on any grade level.  One benefit of engineered flooring is that it can be sanded, depending on how thick the top layer is.

  • What is a bamboo floor?

It is not a tree, but a grass.  Each spring, a grove of bamboo will grow to its full height.  When bamboo is harvested, the root system is left intact, and a new shoot will grow from the same system.  A new bamboo plant will reach maturity (about 80 feet) in just five to six years, making it a smart renewable resource.   Bamboo represents the current and future shift into the Green movement.  It is a durable and an environmentally intelligent alternative.  That being said, the quality and outcome of your floor depends on the specific manufacturer and an expeienced installer.
